曾经有人说，地球应该叫做水球。因为当一个人在太空向地球了望时，他将看到一颗巨大的蓝色球体，因为他看到的是覆盖地球大部分的海洋，因而使地球成为一颗“蓝色的行星”。因为在表面积为5.11×108平方千米的地球中大部分都是海洋、江河、湖泊只有1.49×108平方千米是陆地，因而科学家得到了一个结论：地球上七分是海洋，三分是陆地。因此绝大多数人都认为地球上的水有那么多，浪费一点也没有事，反正地球上的水用之不尽，取之不竭。但是他们并不知道，全球虽然有71%为海洋，但是供人类用的淡水资源却很少。在全球71%的海洋中，约有97%为海洋水，即咸水或其他人类不可用的水资源，而人类所需的淡水却仅占全球水量的2.5%地球上的淡水资源，绝大部分为两极和高山的冰川，其余大部分为深层地下水。目前人类利用的淡水资源，主要是江河湖泊水和浅层地下水，仅占全球淡水资源的0.3%我国是一个贫水的国家。与世界各国相比，我国水资源总量少于巴西、俄罗斯、美国和印度尼西亚，位于世界第6位；若按人均水资源计算，则仅为世界水平的1/4排在第110位之后。缺水情况在全国范围内普遍存在，而且又不断加剧的趋势。以城市供水为例，全国大约670个城市中，一半以上存在着不同程度的缺水现象，其中严重缺水的有110多个。

2000年1月30日，罗马尼亚境内一处金矿污水沉淀池，因积水暴涨发生温漫坝，10多万升含有大量氰化物、铜和铅等重金属的污水冲泄到多瑙河支流蒂萨河，并顺流南下，迅速汇入多瑙河向下游扩散，造成河鱼大量死亡，河水不能饮用。匈牙利、南斯拉夫等国深受其害，国民经济和人民生活都遭受一定的影响，严重破坏了多瑙河流域的生态环境，并引发了国际诉讼。

1994年7月，淮河上游的河南境内突降暴雨，颍上水库水位急骤上涨超过防洪警戒线，因此开闸泄洪将积蓄于上游一个冬春的2亿立方米水放了下来。水经之处河水泛浊，河面上泡沫密布，顿时鱼虾丧失。下游一些地方居民饮用了虽经自来水厂处理，但未能达到饮用标准的河水后，出现恶心、腹泻、呕吐等症状。经取样检验证实上游来水水质恶化，沿河各自来水厂被迫停止供水达54天之久，百万淮河民众饮水告急，不少地方花高价远途取水饮用，有些地方出现居民抢购矿泉水的场面，这就是震惊中外的"淮河水污染事件"。

1950年，在日本水俣湾附近的小渔村中，发现大批精神失常而自杀的猫和狗。1953年，水俣镇发现了一个怪病人，开始时步态不稳，面部呆痴，进而是耳聋眼瞎，全身麻木，最后精神失常，一会儿酣睡，一会儿兴奋异常，身体弯弓，高叫而死。1956年又有同样病症的女孩住院，引起当地熊本大学医院专家注意，开始调查研究。|||最后发现原来是当地一个化肥厂在生产氯乙烯和醋酸乙烯时，采用成本低的汞催化剂工艺，把大量含有有机汞的废水排入水俣湾，使鱼中毒，人和猫、狗吃了毒鱼生病而死。1972年日本环境厅公布：水俣湾和新县阿贺野川下游有汞中毒者283人，其中60人死亡。

1955—1972年，在日本富山县神通川流域两岸出现了一种怪病，患者中妇女比男士多，患上此病，则全身骨骼疼痛，不能行走，故取名为“痛痛病”。经调查，这是一种镉中毒事件，起因是附近的电镀厂、蓄电池制造厂及熔接工厂或因采矿工业含镉之废水未经适当处理而径行排水，污染了神通川水体，两岸居民利用河水灌溉农田，使稻米和饮用水含镉而中毒，1963年至1979年3月共有患者130人，其中死亡81人。

1986年位于莱茵河上游的瑞士一座叫做桑多兹的化工厂仓库失火，有10吨杀虫剂和含有多种有毒化学物质的污水流入莱茵河，其影响达500多公里。

2000年，罗马尼亚边境城镇奥拉迪亚一座金矿泄漏出氰化物废水，流到了南联盟境内。毒水流经之处，所有生物全都在极短时间内暴死。流经罗马尼亚、匈牙利和南联盟的欧洲大河之——蒂萨河及其支流内80％的鱼类完全灭绝，沿河地区进入紧急状态。这是自前苏联切尔诺贝利核电站事故以来欧洲最大环境灾难。
